Salt system warnings rarely mean what they say
When a salt system shows a low salt light, a check cell message, or no output at all, most owners assume the cell is finished. Sometimes it is. Just as often, the problem is scale on the plates, a flow switch that is not reading, salt that is genuinely low after heavy rain, water that is too cool for the cell to produce, or a controller that needs attention. Replacing a cell without ruling those out can cost real money and leave the original problem in place.
Sun Harbor Pools diagnoses salt systems across Jensen Beach and the surrounding Martin County route. We test the water independently, inspect the cell, check flow and the controller, and explain what is really going on. If the cell, controller or another component needs repair or replacement, that is performed by licensed partners we coordinate, quoted before work.
Our salt system diagnostic, step by step
- Independent salt and chemistry test. We compare our reading to the controller's. A wide gap points toward the cell or sensor rather than the water.
- Cell inspection. We pull the cell and look at the plates for scale, debris and wear. Scaled plates are common when pH runs high, which salt pools tend to do.
- Flow detection. A flow switch or sensor that is stuck, fouled or misreading can shut generation down entirely even when the pump is running.
- Circulation behind the cell. A clogged filter or weak pump can reduce flow enough to trigger warnings.
- Controller and wiring. Visible connections, error messages, and output settings.
If scale is the issue, a salt cell cleaning runs $60 to $75. If the plates are worn rather than scaled, cleaning will not help, and we explain what a replacement would involve.
Coastal humidity and the Indian River Lagoon
Homes near the Indian River Lagoon and the beaches see damp, salty air most of the year. Salt system controllers, terminal connections and cell cords are exposed to that air at the pad, and corrosion on a connection can produce intermittent faults that come and go with the weather. We look at those connections as part of every salt diagnosis, along with the rest of the pad: pump, filter, valves, heater and cleaner, because the cell depends on all of them.
Summer rain matters here too. A few days of heavy storms can dilute salt enough to trigger a low reading that is real, not a fault.
Where our work ends
We diagnose salt systems and the equipment around them. We do not perform structural repair, resurfacing, decks, screen enclosures or construction. If a visit turns up something outside our lane, such as a crack near a return fitting or a cracked deck around the skimmer, we tell you what we saw and the kind of contractor to call, without guessing at the cost.
Get the salt system checked
Call or text (772) 919-9365, or request a quote. A photo of the controller display and your most recent salt reading, if you have one, helps us prepare. We will find the cause and coordinate any repair through licensed partners, with the price set before work begins.
If you would rather not track salt and pH yourself, weekly service for a saltwater pool is our standard rate plus $20 a month, which puts the cell on a regular inspection schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
My salt system says low salt, but I just added salt. Why?+
The cell or its sensor may be scaled or failing, the reading may be off, or the controller may need attention. An independent test tells us whether the water or the equipment is the problem.
How long does a salt cell last?+
Lifespan varies with usage and water balance. A cell that spends months in high pH water scales more often and usually wears out sooner than one kept in range.
Can a salt cell be cleaned instead of replaced?+
Often, yes. If the plates are scaled but intact, a cleaning at $60 to $75 may restore output. If the coating is worn, cleaning will not bring it back.
Do you install new salt systems?+
No. We diagnose the system and recommend a direction. Installation or replacement is performed by licensed partners we coordinate and quoted before work.
